DogTime Review: Does King Kanine’s King Kalm CBD Oil Really Bring The ‘Kalm’ To Pets?

You may have heard about CBD oil recently. There’s been a lot of buzz about it and its reported health benefits, both for people and pets. But does it work? King Kanine, a company that makes CBD products for pets, gave me and my pets the opportunity to find out.

Cannabidiol, or CBD, has been the subject of recent controversy. Does the cannabis-extracted substance actually have medical benefits? Or is it an expensive case of the placebo effect?

One issue is that there’s no federal standard for testing for CBD products, which means you don’t always know what you’re going to get. There also have been few (and in the case of animals, practically no) large-scale studies investigating the medical effects of CBD.

That’s why it is always important to research any potential CBD product before you try it with your pet, which is what I did when I tried King Kanine’s King Kalm CBD Oil for my dogs and cat.

What Is King Kanine CBD Oil?

Since there is no federal testing standard for CBD products, you always want to make sure that the supplier you are purchasing from completes a level of inspection. King Kanine’s products are fully-tested by a certified ISO-17025 Lab.

All of their CBD is derived from non-GMO and organic hemp, and the hemp is not grown with pesticides. These rigorous standards made me feel safe giving my pets the product.

The oil itself comes in a brown glass bottle. It also includes a syringe to measure out the correct dosage for your pet. It may look intimidating at first, but it’s just for measuring and applying, not injecting. No needles.

Two Dogs And A Cat Try King Kalm

The instructions suggest that you directly squirt the CBD oil into your pet’s mouth, but my animals were not having that. Fortunately, you can also place the proper dose on a treat, let it soak in for a second, and administer it to your pet that way.

I gave my two dogs, Betty and Genie, and my cat, Pookie, the recommended dosage for three weeks straight. CBD oil is supposed to have a multitude of benefits for your pet, like treating pain, reducing anxiety, and helping stimulate appetite or suppress nausea, to name a few.

As my dogs are nervous Chihuahuas, I was most interested to see if it would help with their penchant for walking under my feet all the time.

As for Pookie, I wanted to see if this would help keep her from waking me up at four in the morning for an early breakfast. Pookie can be a bored eater, and I wondered if the CBD would help her chill out.

Did King Kanine CBD Oil Work?

The oil absolutely had a noticeable effect! It took about ten minutes or so, but all of my animals definitely seemed like they mellowed out.

To be clear, CBD oil does not have any psychoactive properties, like cannabis, itself. So my pets weren’t getting stoned or high by any means, but they definitely were a lot calmer.

Betty and Genie didn’t always follow me into every room I went into like they usually do. Betty, who can play for ten hours straight, didn’t seem as hyperactive as she can be on some days.

The biggest difference I saw was in my cat, Pookie.

She’s not the cuddliest cat in the world, especially when my dogs are attached at the hip at all times. After taking the CBD oil, Pookie had no qualms sitting right on my recliner’s armrest and snuggling up next to me. She still did occasionally yowl for food in the middle of the night, but it wasn’t as frequent as normal.

Should You Buy King Kanine CBD Oil For Your Pet?

I like the effects the oil had on my pets, but the price tag can be pretty steep; the King Kalm 300mg bottle, which is ideal for larger dogs, runs at $89. Although, depending on the size of your pets, that supply might last a long time.

Given the cost and the size of my animals, I think this is something I would purchase leading up to certain occasions, like on the Fourth of July, to keep them from freaking out during fireworks.

The product works best when it has time to build up in your pet’s system, so it may take some pets a few weeks to see the full benefits. If you intend to only use it once in a while, you may not see those benefits right away.

However, I noticed results almost immediately after giving it to my pets. So for some animals, you may only need to use it for those special occasions.

Unless one of my pets developed a physical ailment that put them in a certain amount of pain, using the 300mg strength CBD oil daily would be a little to pricey for me. Though if your pets do suffer from certain chronic issues, King Kanine products would likely help them out.

King Kanine also offers CBD products that have lower doses and lower prices, so you can definitely find one that’s affordable and right for your pets’ needs.

If you are going to try out this product, be sure you are purchasing the correct dosage for your dog’s weight. I received the 300mg amount, and since all of my animals are under 15 pounds, I was giving them teensy tiny amounts of the oil.

As always, be sure to consult your veterinarian before giving your pet something new, including CBD oil.
